Colorado’s HB26-1119 – Squeeze the property Tax payer…

The purpose of government is to establish infrastructure for citizens and private business and then get out of the way. The current Colorado Democrat controlled legislature does exactly the opposite. They are figuring out ways to squeeze every penny out of the taxpayer. Case in point HB26-1119 – Concerning the authority of local taxing entities to impose property taxes on the assessed value of land and the assessed value of improvements thereon at different mill levy rates.

Colorado Democrat controlled legislature in action

This bill fundamentally alters Colorado’s property tax system by allowing different tax rates for land and improvements, creating instability and inequity for property owners. Taxing land at a higher rate would disproportionately impact long-time homeowners, retirees, and those on fixed incomes—especially in neighborhoods experiencing rising land values or gentrification—potentially forcing them to sell despite no changes to their homes.

It would also make homeownership in established communities less attainable for first-time buyers and participants in affordable housing programs.

I work with seniors on fixed incomes that are struggling as the Colorado legislature goes wild creating new fees and taxes. It is a reality that people are having to sell their homes as they are unable to pay the higher costs. The Democrats legislature and Governor are just devastating to home ownership in Colorado.
