Out of state “Citizen’s group” seeks to end shooting of prairie dogs on Colorado’s public lands

Once again, out of state groups seek to manage wildlife through public petitions. Colorado has become an easy target from out of state groups to get almost any petition on the ballot. This is not a wise regulatory approach.

We all know where the dangers are to prairie dogs, lack of habitat due to housing development and … yeah you guessed it, living by the roads.

If shooting of prairie dogs was a threat to the species, there wouldn’t be any now. Remember the millions of buffalo that roamed the prairies? Gone in a few years. Prairie dogs are different, they reproduce faster than ferrel pigs in Texas, where they can’t get rid of the nuisance pigs. Today’s hunters are conservationists, they protect the species they hunt. Don’t be bamboozled by these wacko groups.

This is yet another pipe dream to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. If there was a threat to the prairie dog populations, the CPW would have put bag restrictions (hunting limits like they do on game birds, fish and big game). But no, let’s pass a public petition as the public are experts in small game population management… NOT.
