But since Jared Polis has been Colorado Governor (January 8, 2019), the number of laws that regulate your everyday life has exploded — out of control. Most of these bills regulate, regulate, regulate, tax, tax, tax, fee, fee, fee and limit your liberties. This is called centralized government.
The Colorado state legislature passes about five hundreds bills each regular session, most of which Polis has signed into law.
An approximate breakdown of all the bills signed by year is given below. Note this includes regular and special sessions:
2019: 454 signed (5 vetoed)
2020: 326 signed (3 vetoed; lower due to COVID-19 disruptions)
2021: 502 signed (few vetoed; legislature sent ~503 bills)
2022: 507 signed (4 vetoed)
2023: 473 signed (10 vetoed)
2024: 519 signed (6 vetoed; out of 525 passed by the legislature—the highest in over a decade)
2025: 476 signed (11 vetoed; a personal veto record for Polis)
2026: 600+ is on the plate for this legislative session.
There will be approximately 4,000 bills in the Polis reign. And the number of bills passed each year is accelerating. The job of government is to streamline economic progress for private businesses, not regulate every inch of business.
